Obituary for Wallace (Wally) I Johnston
Wallace (Wally) Irwin Johnston, age 82, of Brainerd, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018, at Essentia-St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Wally was born on August 5, 1936 in Brainerd to Wallace & Elizabeth (Paulson) Johnston, Sr. He married the love of his life, Hope Jacobson, on June 28, 1958, at First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd. They were happily married for 60 years.
Wally was a good man and an engaged father who worked hard to provide for his family as a roofing contractor, and a beef cattle farmer. He started working for his father as a roofer in his teens and ultimately took over the family roofing business. He prided himself on his honesty and quality workmanship. It seemed if there was daylight, he was working. In his limited spare time, he loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed starting each day with a predawn, competitive game of Sequence with his wife, Hope. He was a big man with an even bigger heart and humble spirit. He will be remembered fondly for his mischievous sense of humor. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Wally is survived by his wife, Hope; four children: Pete (Michelle) Johnston of Baxter, Paul (Tahtianna) Johnston of Lakeview, SC, Faith (Todd Spooner) Johnston of Genesee, CO and Cherri (Earl) Ruckdaschel of Brainerd; siblings: Jewel (Al) Schilling, Madonna Boser, Bob (Lynn) Johnston, Darlene (Walt) Hillman, and Diane Larson; 19 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jeanette Johnston; numerous extended family.
Wally is preceded in death by his parents; brothers; Loren Johnston and Marlin Johnston; grandson, Shane; daughter-in-law, Wanda Johnston; brother-in-law, Jim Boser.
A memorial service celebrating Wally’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 11AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, Friday, at the church, with a luncheon to follow.
